About the Artist

Watercolor Art Gallery

Ludlow Thorston was a truly American watercolorist. His medium was aquarelle, a traditional, transparent watercolor style. His paintings reflect his personality, sincere and direct, yet softened by his appreciation of the beauty in all subjects. Collectors in the United States and abroad have found in his paintings a calm depth that is both relaxing, yet imaginative. What appears to be fine detail actually is an illusion which allows the viewer to explore.

Ludlow Thorston graduated Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, received his BA and MA from New York University and continued studies at Seton Hall University. A member of several art organizations, past president of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and Essex Watercolor Club, Ludlow Thorston made a great contribution to the art world, art students and art collectors. His paintings have been exhibited by many East Coast galleries during his successful career, and in 1979 the first Ludlow Thorston Gallery was established. The gallery still continues and is the only source for his original watercolors. The gallery is in Island Heights, New Jersey, and operated by his wife Nell. She enjoys welcoming visitors and collectors to the friendly, casual gallery where all original watercolors and limited edition prints are displayed.
